Beaujolais Bottle & Laying Up Lunch

A hardy, or as some would say foolhardy, few braved the wet and cold conditions to race for the Beaujolais Bottle trophy at Lackford Lake, on Sunday. This was the last series event of the 2014 season.

Debs Steele (Topper) led off the start followed by her husband Mike (Topper) and the Enterprise of Carl Day and Alan Shaw. The faster Enterprise soon took the lead, while the Steele’s Toppers had a close battle for most of the race. Mike Steele eventually managed to get passed his wife but was only ten seconds ahead at the finish. The Day/ Shaw partnership secured line honours but lost out on handicap to the Toppers on corrected time.

With conditions not improving, it was decided to forego another race and to retire to the comfort of the club house for the laying up lunch, which had been kindly prepared by Kathie. It was delicious and particularly appreciated by those who had been on the water.

Although Mike Steele won the day prize, the Day/Shaw teams third was sufficient to secure them the Winter Series trophy.

There will be a Boxing Day race for the Frostbite Trophy, starting at 12 pm. The 2015 sailing season will commence on the 28th March.
